Well well, the Home Secretary Amber Rudd has resigned.
“Amber Rudd has resigned as home secretary, saying she “inadvertently misled” MPs over targets for removing illegal immigrants. The Windrush scandal had heaped pressure on Ms Rudd, who faced criticism over whether she knew about Home Office removals targets. Prime Minister Theresa May said she was “very sorry” to see Ms Rudd leave. Shadow home secretary Diane Abbott, who had repeatedly urged Ms Rudd to go, said she had “done the right thing”.
I am sure Theresa May is very sorry to see Rudd go as she has been quite happy to keep her in situ to deflect flak from the previous Home Secretary who also bungled over thw Windrush issue. That’s Theresa May, Home Secretary 2010-2016.
However the reason Rudd has gone is that her inability to provide accurate and consistent information on the Windrush issue looked like she was misleading Parliament. I do not she was – I think the Home Office is inherently dysfunctional and has been for decades now. Big Government is never very effective government.
It’s reported that May is weighing up who will succeed Rudd and she has two primary concerns in that regard. Can she maintain the gender-balance and the Remain/Leave balance in the cabinet? The very fact that such inane considerations top her priority list tell you the most important thing of all – it’s time May went as well.
Coming just a few days before the local council elections in England, this choas cannot help the Conservative cause, although local issues tend to dominate local council elections. May is slowly but surely destroying her Party but those around her lack the bottle to do anything about it.
