BREXIT – WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has achieved quite a lot in a very short time.

Back in January, she suffered the biggest defeat in modern Parliamentary history when her Withdrawal Agreement was defeated by a massive 230 votes (432 against vs 202 for). Tonight, she represented her mildly revised Withdrawal Agreement to Parliament and she has suffered the 4th biggest defeat in Parliamentary history by 149 votes (391 against vs 242 for)

Despite the usual leaving it to the very last moment and then trying to push through the Deal with a combination of threats, bribes and promises, she failed. And the scale of the defeat shows that her “Deal” is now toast. It simply cannot come back.

BREXIT - WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

She was able to win over some former opponents of her Withdrawal Agreement, most significantly David Davis, a former Brexit Secretary. In supporting her revised Agreement, Davis sheds any residual credibility and shows himself unfit to ever become Prime Minister. He seemed intent to put party survival interest before country.

What happens next?

Tomorrow (Weds) there will be a free vote on whether the House of Commons wants to take the already legislated option of “No Deal” off the table. Given that around 500 of the 650 MPs voted to Remain back in 2016, there is a strong likelihood that this may happen. If it does happen, there is no guarantee that this could be enacted in Law before we actually do Leave on 29th March.

If it IS legally enacted then essentially the cleanest Brexit is removed from the statute. A “No deal” means a complete break from the EU and fully delivers on the vote of June 23rd 2016.

It fulfils the wishes of 17.4m people and that is why the Commons wants to stop it.

There will then be a further vote on Thursday to request an extension of Article 50. If the EU agrees to this, the UK would then remain in the EU for a specified time. At this point, Brexit has been reversed and the betrayal of the voters who wanted to Leave complete.

WHAT SHOULD THE 17.4M DO?

It seems obvious that this Parliament has played lip service to implementing the will of the 2016 Referendum whilst ensuring it can never happen. May’s Deal was a Brexit in Name Only.

Labour wants the same, insisting we stay in customs alignment, paying money into the EU and keeping borders open.

So BOTH the major political parties are determined to subvert the will of their voters. What shall we do?

BREXIT - WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

In 1653, Oliver Cromwell dismissed the Rump Parliament using these fine words;

Your country therefore calls upon me to cleanse this Augean stable, by putting a final period to your iniquitous proceedings in this House; and which by God’s help, and the strength he has given me, I am now come to do.

I command ye therefore, upon the peril of your lives, to depart immediately out of this place.

Go, get you out! Make haste! Ye venal slaves be gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors.

In the name of God, go!

Have we reached another 17th century moment?

Should a General Election be called?

Should Theresa May resign?

Will there be a further Referendum?

The UK stands on the brink and the cause is simple.

Parliament is rebelling against the People.

Pick a side!

    “her “Deal” is now toast.”
Remember she works for Brussels, and they always insist that you keep voting until they get the decision they like.

Ask the Queen to suspend Parliament. It would be the last, great gift to her people to deliver a no deal Brexit and keep the honor of the UK intact.
