The fake news media is almost swooning with excitement at the prospect of the UK having to sacrifice Northern Ireland on the altar of cutting a deal with the EU.

Today sees the EU publish its “legal document” on how it sees the Brexit negotiations progressing. It is being claimed that they will posit a last resort scenario under which Northern Ireland will remain aligned with European single market rules. In other words, it seeks to split one part of the UK from the other parts, exactly what IRA terrorists tried to do for decades using bullets and bombs.

The UK government must robustly dismiss ANY suggestion that any aspect of this can be accommodated. There are several really good reasons why we should tell the EU where to go on this one:

  • The UK voted to leave the EU as one constitutional entity. It is simply not possible for regions to pick and choose if they wish to stay in parts of the EU.
  • 60% of Northern Irish trade is with the rest of the UK. Forcing business to remain in the Single Market would be economically catastrophic for this huge trade balance.
  • The UK has repeatedly stated that it wants a soft border, driven by modern technology, with the Irish Republic. It is the EU, along with their little pawns in the Irish Government, who are trying to create the false impression that we cannot enforce our own border in this way.
  • The idea that if we do not concede to the EU demand then it will place a hard border in place between the Irish Republic and the UK is contemptible. Such an arrangement would devastate the Irish economy. The fact that the Irish go along with such a fantasy shows how cucked they are to the EU.

Thus far, Theresa May has tended to roll over to EU demands. That must cease today. Why? The Democratic Unionist Party, which offers vital support in key votes to the Tory government, says details of the draft treaty have “fundamentally breached” an agreement reached in Brussels late last year. Conservative Brexiteers say it is “completely unacceptable” and would effectively annex Northern Ireland.

Both are right. The DUP simply cannot accept ANYTHING that treats one part of the UK differently to another since that would be an abrogation of British sovereignty. It would be the beginning of the end of the Union.

The butt hurt Remainers out there then revert to the tiresome mantra “but if we don’t keep the border wide open the IRA will start killing people again” as it would be a breach in the Belfast Agreement. Risible nonsense. The Belfast Agreement fully respects the constitutional position of Northern Ireland as an integral part of the UK. Trying to force us to remain in the Single Market whilst the rest of the UK leave sit would be a breach of this. Secondly, the UK already has a border with the Irish Republic. It is a currency border, an excise border, a tax border. The fact that security watchtowers were dismantled did not mean the Border vanished. It was just less visible. Finally, to those who use the threat of renewed IRA violence as a bargaining lever, didn’t they disarm and go away? Isn’t that what we were told and is a fundamental of the “peace process”? Surely we haven’t been lied to for decades?

What we see today is a power grab by the voracious tyranny of the EU. It is patently seeking to keep one region of the UK in one of its fundamental EU institutions. Theresa May must plainly state today that the UK is leaving the EU and its every institution as ONE single constititional unit. The EU and Irish bluff needs called. If May wobbles then the DUP have no choice but to bring her government down. We cannot allow the EU to achieve that which the IRA failed to do. It used to be “Ulster says No” but today it should be the United Kingdom that says No.
