The primary role of Government is to protect its citizens from those who would do them harm and the Police fulfil a very useful function in carrying out this obligation. The central role of the Police, of course, is to fairly and impartially uphold the law, something which most decent people fully support. But a disturbing trend has been taking place as new media encroaches into the policing arena and we see things like this appearing on-line from Surrey Police!
All very reasonable you might think until you realise that Surrey Police have yet to convict so much as one person in their district of the savage practise of Female Genital Mutilation. For them to use Twitter to virtue signal their solidarity with young girls being mutilated falls short of them actually DOING anything to stop it! What a waste of time and resources. Naturally, people reading this tweet by Surrey Police responded in the same way as I have, by expressing incredulity at the sheer vacuousness of the tweet. This was the response then posted by Surrey Police.
What? They are “saddened” that people have taken to Twitter to “abuse” those who carry out the female genital mutilation. Not only are they “saddened” about it but they term the understandable outrage as “Islamophobic” and indicate that they are reporting accounts to Twitter and their own mysterious “Intelligence teams”. I venture to suggest that their “Intelligence teams” might do better to try and gain some intelligence on those carrying out the FGM that they felt obliged to Tweet about in the first place.
Surrey Police illustrate in microcosm a bigger problem. Too many Police Forces across the UK are patrolling Twitter to hunt down those who express opinions that the Police don’t like. Meanwhile and right under their noses, thousands of defenceless young girls are having their genitals mutilated – a crime in the United Kingdom. Shouldn’t these Police Forces be patrolling the real world where the cutters operate? Shouldn’t these Police Forces be applauding those who show their outrage at this barbarism rather than reporting them to Twitter? Above all, shouldn’t the Police understand that by throwing out the utter banality of the term “Islamophobia” they will only close down debate and possible sources of intelligence on tracking down the savages carrying out this grotesque butchery?
